Becoming a Ride Leader

Sheffield CTC needs more members to lead rides. To ensure safe rides, ride leaders need to be experienced cyclists, used to riding in a group.

Ride Leader Criteria: Take a look to see if you fit the bill (click here).

Training: If you would like to train to become a local ride leader you can do this through the club. For more details please email garethdent@gmail.com

Mentors: To encourage and help new ride leaders on their first few rides we have a number of experienced leaders who will mentor you through the process (discuss the route and route description, help you on the day of the ride and provide feedback on how the ride went plus any other help you need). If you want to lead a ride you can contact a mentor from the list here to see if they are available to help.

Ride Leader Resources

Checklist: To help leaders understand their responsibilities when leading a ride. To download it click here.

Route Library: We have a growing list of downloadable ‘tried and tested routes’ to save ride leaders from needing to devise new routes every time. For more details click here.

Ride Leader Kit List: To download it click here.

List of Riders: The ride leader should collect the following information from anyone joining the ride:
NAME
PHONE NUMBER
EMERGENCY CONTACT NAME
EMERGENCY CONTACT PHONE NUMBER
CTC MEMBER Y/N
How this information is collected/stored is at the ride leader’s discretion – sign up sheet, note book, digital. Back markers or leaders of sub-groups should have a copy of the sign up information, probably as an image or text file on a smart phone. The information should be retained for four weeks and then destroyed/deleted.
If you wish to use our paper sign-up sheet to register participants in a group ride you can download it here.

Risk Assessment: All outdoor activities carry risks however small, you should familiarise yourself with the Sheffield and District CTC Generic Risk Assessment.

Cycling UK Incident Report Form: Incident report forms should be used where a rider has a fall/collision or where there is a near miss incident or for any reason where the Ride Leader thinks that an issue occurring on a ride needs to be brought to the attention of the committee.  As well as providing evidence should any legal proceedings be brought the forms help the committee consider if, as a club, we can take any steps to improve the safety of rides.  Where a third party is involved it is important to collect as much info as possible e.g. name, tel., car registration, insurance details etc. Incident Report Forms are now completed and submitted on-line. Before submitting please also send a copy of the details to the club secretary, currently Angela Walker at ctcsheffield@gmail.com. The form can be accessed here.
