BANK VIEW CAFE GRADE 2
9 March 2025 10:00 am - 3:30 pm
Depot Bakery, Coach House, Coach House, Hillsborough Park, Sheffield S6 4HD, UK
Bank View Cafe (Grade 2)
Starts: 10.00 Depot Bakery, Hillsborough Park
Leader: Gareth Dent 07792 899501
Sorry for the late notice, but I have tweaked my route for tomorrow's ride (Sunday 9 March). This is due to Sugworth Road remaining closed and CTC insurance not covering ride leaders who ignore road closures. The tweak makes the ride slightly shorter. There's less climbing, but it remains a Grade 2 ride. The start details reman unchanged.
Depot Cafe Hillsborough Park 9.30am for coffee, 10am prompt start. Towards the shorter end of the Grade 2 rides, this route nevertheless packs in a few punchy climbs. From the cafe, we head towards Wortley and then up to Green Moor before descending to the cafe. The route back follows Mortimer Road, climbing Ewden Bank the easy (easier?) way before dropping down to Low Bradfield and somewhat inevitably climbing up to its higher neighbour. From there it is a straightforward descent back to Hillsborough Park.
The last edition of this ride saw riders exercising their creativity on the route back. This is absolutely fine as long as everyone is with a small group.

Monyash (Grade 3)
Starts: 9.30 Millhouses Park Cafe
Leader: David Bishop 07792741216
Lighter evenings, so it’s time to up the mileage. And while we’re at it let’s increase the climbing. Up over the moors and down to Darley Bridge for the long climb through Winster and Elton to Parsley Hay. After the cafe stop in Monyash we head for Ashford-in-the-Water and over Longstone Edge to take in the magnificent view. The drop through Eyam leads to the final climb from Grindleford up along Padley Gorge to Fox House and the descent home. It’s a very scenic route and, although we won’t be racing, please be aware that this is quite a challenging ride because of the climbing. It’s 30 miles to the cafe stop, so you’ll need to bring a snack.

CANNON HALL GRADE 2
23 March 2025 9:45 am - 3:30 pm
Depot Bakery, The Coachouse, Hillsborough Park
Cannon Hall (Grade 2)
Starts: 9.45 Depot Bakery, Coach House, H'bo park
Leader: Ang Walker 07702 034467
Meet at Depot, Hillsborough Park Cafe, for a 9.45am departure (to avoid clash with Junior Parkrun). We'll head out up the steep hill to Fox Lane and on to Grenoside and Wortley. At Wortley we will turn off towards Hood Green and take the quiet lanes to Silkstone - care needs to be taken on the descents as some of these lanes are badly surfaced and potholey - before dropping down to Cannon Hall Farm for Lunch (https://www.cannonhallfarm.co.uk/things-to-do/the-white-bull/). After lunch we'll climb back up the hill and across to Ingbirchworth Reservoir then drop back down to Millhouse Green to pick up the TPT. Just before the Thurgoland tunnel we'll turn off the TPT on to Old Mill Laneback to Wortley Forge. At Wortley we have a choice of taking the alternative traffic-free trail through Wharncliffe Woods to Oughtibridge or carrying on along the road to Deepcar and Bitholmes. (GPX file is road route). The lunch stop is less than half way around the route but as we have a flatter route back, the return leg should theoretically be easier. Bring a spare snack if you think you might get hungry after our early lunch!

JACKSON BRIDGE GRADE2
6 April 2025 9:30 am - 3:00 pm
Depot Bakery, Coach House, Hillsborough park
Jackson Bridge (Grade 2)
Starts: 9.30 Depot Bakery, Hillsborough Park
Leader: Gareth Dent 07792 899501
Simon Warren's 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs gives the ascent from Jackson Bridge a surprising 7/10. Don't let that put you off, however, in my opinion it is much easier than Holme Moss which is rated 5/10. What it does give you is a fabulous view over the Holme Valley and a glorious long straight descent to the lunch stop at the Windmill Cafe.
Meet at the Depot Cafe at 9am if you want coffee (and possibly a pain au chocolat!) for a departure at 9.30. The lunch stop is two thirds of the way round the ride, so bring a banana or other snack to keep you going. Typically the roads north west of Sheffield are quieter than further south in the Peak District and although this is a hilly ride, we will ride it at a moderate place.

60km and around 700m of climbing, this 'figure of 8' route takes in six sections of traffic-free cycle route with a cafe stop at Holme Coffee House in Penistone. Starting from the Kollective Kitchen cafe (opens at 9am for coffee - ride leaves at 9.30am), the route heads out via the Five Weirs Walk to Meadowhall then picks up the Blackburn Valley Trail to Ecclesfield. Here we climb up to Grenoside, along Woodhead Road towards Wortley and drop down into Deepcar to pick up the Fox Valley Trail to Underbank Reservoir. Once around the reservoir we climb back up Mortimer Road then descend into Penistone for a cafe stop at Holme Coffee House (holmecoffeehouse.co.uk). We return via the Transpennine Trail as far as the Thurgoland tunnel, where we join the road to Deepcar and pick up the Plank gate route through Wharncliffe Woods (if it's bad weather there's an option to take the main Bitholmes road back to Oughtibridge instead). After descending Jawbone to Oughtibridge we pick up our final trail through Beeley Woods back into Sheffield. All of the trails are either surfaced or hardpacked and the route will be suitable for bikes with 28mm tyres and above. There may be some muddy sections if the weather is wet so mudguards are advised.

Castlegate Grey to Green Park, 1 Blonk St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S3, UK
Cleethorpes (Grade 4)
Starts: 7.00 Castlegate/corner Blonk St
Leader: Gareth Dent 07792 899501
Back for a 3rd year, Wednesday 25 June, sees the return of The Longest Way, a ridiculous route from Sheffield to the world's largest fish and chip restaurant (allegedly) in Cleethorpes. a 7am start at Castlegate, a second breakfast in Bawtry, coffee and a cake in Crowle, and lunch in Brigg, before the final push to Papa's on the pier for supper. As before, you can choose to take the train back to Sheffield in the evening, or book a room and join me for a shorter leisurely ride the following day (this time to Lincoln) and a train back from there. Please email me to register, letting me know your number, emergency contact and number, and whether you are riding on the second day - garethdent@gmail.com

10 August 2025 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Peaslows (Grade 3)
Starts: 9.30 Millhouses Park Cafe
Leader: Les Sturch 07568547777
Out to Tidsa for a standing snack stop (24km) as lunch is another hilly 25kms. Up lovely Perrydale for Sparrowpit and Slackhall with views over Cheshire, before an ascent of Peaslows (1.6km at a 'solid constant 1 in 10'). More restful back down to Sparrowpit again and over Mam Nick for lunch at Edale (49km) and home up Fiddlers Elbow.
We will take this all at a steady/not fast pace and regroup on hill tops. Fairly hilly but the leader has no intention of rushing to exhaust himself.
Approx 77km, and 1426m ascent.
